Give your legs a hug with Compression stockings
What are graduated compression stockings/socks?
- Graduated compression stockings/socks are special garments that help promote circulation in the legs.
- Compression stockings help relieve the symptoms of varicose veins.
- They improve circulation and are a mainstay of treatment for varicose veins that are causing symptoms
- They are designed to help in driving blood from feet back to the heart.
- Graduated compression stockings apply a certain amount of pressure near the ankle and then apply gradually less and less pressure as they move up the leg.
- In this way, they help to squeeze or push blood back up the leg from the ankle to the thigh in an effort to counteract pooling of blood in the leg and the resultant swelling.
What are the different compression levels?
There are 4 main compression levels which are measured in millimeters of mercury (mmHg). The higher the numbers, the higher the compression.
Class 1
(18-21 mmHg)
Mild varicose without any significant tendency to edema formation, early varicose in pregnancy, feeling heaviness and tiredness in the leg
Class 2
(22-32 mmHg)
Severe varicose vein moderate edema, mild post traumatic swelling, post minor ulceration, post sclerotherapy, post surgery
Class 3
(33-48 mmHg)
Severe chronic venous insufficiency edema formation white atrophy
Class 4
(48-56 mmHg)
Lymph swelling and elephantisis.
(Swelling of body parts e.g., Hand and Legs)
